Artist in Drawing and Motion Drawing Video

Born in Boston, he has lived in New York City since 1961.

Until 1969 he participated in the counter-culture and anti-Vietnam War movements. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Cooper Union School of Art in 1970. He taught drawing in the Fine Arts Department of Parsons The New School for Design from 1980 to 2001. He has been director of the New York Studio Program since 1992. He lives in Manhattan and has a house and studio in the Delaware River Highlands in Sullivan County, New York State, where he is active artistically, in the environmental movement and in the community.

His one-person show in New York, at the Painting Center, “small gestures / MODES OF ESCAPE”, was reviewed in the New York Times, March 1999. He presented a digital video work, “small gestures MODES OF ESCAPE”, an extensive digital video of “drawings in motion” and musical compositions at the DIGit Media Arts Exposition in Narrowsburg, NY, and at the Black Bear Film Festival in Milford, PA. He will exhibit his portrait drawings from the 1980s at the Brattleboro, Vermont, Museum of Art in 2009. He will have a one-person show of four decades of his drawings and recent videos at the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance Gallery in 2009.

Alan Lupiani earned both a Bachelor of Arts and an MBA in Arts Administration from Binghamton University in 1988 and 1991 respectively.  He then proceeded to complete three years of summer art residency on full scholarship at the Chautauqua Institution in upstate NY from 1992-1994, serving as the art school's head Teachers Assistant in 1994.

 

After moving to New York City in 1996, Lupiani worked as an executive level contractor for major telecommunications companies in New York City before deciding to devote his professional life full time to academia and the arts. He has been with the AICAD/New York Studio Program since 1997.

In 2003, Alan was selected to participate in the Drawing Center’s prestigious viewing program for his abilities in drawing.  In 2006, he pursued another one of his passions as a comedic street reporter, working with Hollywood actor and personality Tom Green.

In 2007, Lupiani started his own LIVE web casting parody talk show which was featured exclusively on major websites attracting thousands of viewers each week. As for the future, Alan will concentrate on being the Studio Manager at the AICAD/New York Studio Program and developing his artistic passions as a painter, photographer, talk show host, and art critique/writer.  He has recently launched an art review blog that can be accessed at www.artblognyc.com.
